In case you weren’t paying enough attention to Uncle Frank’s stories at the last family reunion, during WWII, Allied forces found themselves relying more and more on air power to help stamp out fascism. Unfortunately, the troops on the ground were having trouble getting in sync with the flyboys.
They needed a system to make sure the radio tower was sending a signal that the pilot could understand. So they rated the strength and clarity of transmissions on a scale of five. If a pilot said he had a five by five signal, the tower could broadcast knowing that they were being heard loud and clear.
Communicating on a five by five channel is the only way to make sure that you are heard. And that’s why we’re 5BYFIVE.
